Air Conditioning Repair Guide: The Condensate Drain

Your air conditioner does two things at once when it cools: it removes both the heat and the humidity. The heat is released, but where does the extra moisture from the humidity go? That’s where the condensate drain comes in. Like other parts of your air conditioner, the condensate drain can experience problems and requires repairing your air conditioning. Because water damage can result from problems with your condensate drain, it is advisable that you call a professional, like the ones from Raleigh Heating & Air, right away.

Issues that Can Arise

Your air conditioner needs to drain the excess water it pulls from the air. It does this through the condensate tray and drain.

The condensate tray is a tray attached to the indoor unit of your air conditioner. It has a slanted bottom that connects to the condensate pipe. As excess moisture drips into the condensate tray, it runs into the pipe and exits your home.

Problems can develop with both the tray and the pipe. The condensate tray can develop holes or cracks, or disconnect from the drain pipe. The pipe itself can become obstructed with debris and clog.

When there are problems with the tray, the water in the tray cannot drain properly into the condensate pipe, and instead can spill onto the floor underneath. Left long enough, this kind of leaking can cause serious water damage around the indoor unit.

A clogged drain pipe can also cause damage. Water will fill the pipe rather than drain and, as a result, the water will start to back up in the condensate tray; eventually, this water can spill over the sides and will continue to do so until repaired.
