What to Look for in New Products

Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps: SEER

Air conditioners and heat pumps are given a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) number. The higher the SEER number rating is, the more efficiently the system will cool your home. The more efficiently the device operates the more money it will save you over time in operation costs, which is why an air conditioner with the lowest purchase price is not necessarily the wisest investment.

Gas Furnaces: AFUE

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the standard by which gas and oil–fired furnaces are rated. The rating is given in a percentage, and the percentage reflects how much of the fuel used is actually going towards heating your home and how much is wasted. Industry minimums mandate that AFUE ratings be at least 80%. If you have an old furnace or oil–fired burner, there is likely a lot of room for improvement when it comes to efficiency, as many new gas furnaces now have an AFUE rating of between 90–96%.

Heat Pumps (Heating Mode): HSPF

The heating efficiency of heat pumps is measured by its Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF). Heat pumps are generally a very efficient way to heat your home, but even heat pumps have industry mandated efficiency ratings. New model heat pumps must be rated at 6.8 HSPF or higher. Remember, as with any heating or cooling device, higher efficiency will mean a higher price tag. A comfort system is an investment, and you need to spend on your investment in the beginning to net a return in operational savings.
