Our Spring Checklist

Spring is here! The days are longer, flowers are blooming, and summer heat is on the horizon. Use this time to ensure your home is ready for the temperature change. Here’s our spring checklist of 10 things you can do to keep your home nice and cool during the hot summer months.

1 Change Your Filters

We recommend you change your air filter every month during the summer and winter and every two to three months during the spring and fall. Changing your filters will reduce the dust and debris circulating throughout your home and improve the efficiency of your comfort system. A good rule of thumb is to replace it if you can’t see light through it.

2 Clean Your Bathroom Fans

We recommend removing your bathroom fan covers, washing them in soapy water, and using an old toothbrush to clean the crevices and fan blades. Be sure to run your fans after you shower to keep humidity levels down.

3 Schedule Your AC Maintenance

Routine maintenance will increase your energy efficiency, maintain the life span of your equipment, and reduce the risk of a costly breakdown. We recommend you have biannual maintenance done to your HVAC system, once in the spring or summer for your AC system and once in the fall or winter for your heating system. Learn about how our Comfort Club Maintenance Program can help you save.

4 Dust Your Ceiling Fans

When was the last time you dusted your ceiling fans? Add cleaning your fan blades to your spring checklist. Cleaning your fans before you use them will help with the air quality of your home and reduce dust that could trigger allergies and asthma.

5 Seal the Gaps

One of the most effective ways to save energy is to seal air leaks in the home. Your AC must work harder to counteract unconditioned air from gaps in doors, windows, attics, and basements. Make sure to caulk and seal any cracks or openings in window frames, doors, and around the openings in attics and basements as part of your spring checklist.

6 Fire Up the Grill

Your oven and stovetop can heat up a room. Use the nice weather to your advantage and cook outside. It is a great way to get some fresh air and helps save money on your cooling costs.

7 Install A Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat could save you up to 10% yearly on heating and cooling costs. Setting an efficient schedule will ensure your home is cool when you arrive home, but not working harder than necessary while you are away.

If you’re leaving pets at home while you’re away, keep the thermostat programmed below 78 degrees.

8 Close Blinds and Curtains

Close the blinds and curtains on your south—and west-facing windows during the day to prevent the sun’s rays from heating your home.

9 Use Fans

Air movement will make you feel cooler and allow you to set the thermostat up a degree or two while remaining comfortable.

10 Unblock Air Vents

Move any furniture or rugs that may be covering air vents to maximize the airflow throughout your home.

Now that you have a spring checklist to prepare your home and your air conditioner for summer, we can look forward to warm weather without any worry. Here’s to long, sunny days filled with family, friends, and fun and to cool, chill nights where you fall asleep to the quiet hum of a reliable air conditioning system.
