Why Should I Have Blower Door Testing for My Home?

Energy efficiency is an important part of what we do. When we install or repair an HVAC system, we’re not only providing a service to heat and cool a home properly. We’re providing a service that will save the homeowner money. Duct cleaning and duct sealing are also important parts of making sure that an HVAC system works at the highest levels of energy efficiency.

However, energy efficiency applies to the entire house as well. If you’re looking to create the most energy-efficient home possible, you should call us for blower door testing.

What Is a Blower Door?

You may have seen blower doors before but not known that’s what they’re called. A blower door is a large plastic or canvas cover that goes completely over an open door frame and seals it. The bottom part of the blower door contains a large fan which attached to a manometer to measure pressure.

To perform a blower door test, the entire house is first closed off to the outside: doors, windows, chimneys, etc. Only the front door is left open, and the blower is sealed over it. The fan in the blower door draws out the air from inside the home, causing the air pressure to drop. This will cause air from outside the house to find any open crack or leaks to enter the vacuum. This allows technicians to discover how sealed the home is against energy loss, and where any energy loss is taking place.

How Blower Door Test Results Can Help You

Once you have the results from a blower door test, you’ll have a good idea about how your home gains extra heat during hot weather and loses heat during cold weather. You can use the knowledge to improve insulation and air sealing. The end result will be a home that performs at improved efficiency all around—especially the heating and air conditioning system.
