What to Do When One of Your Ductless Mini Split Units Isn’t Running
A ductless mini split heat pump is one of the best ways to enjoy comfort around the year: you have the benefits of heating and cooling in a single system without needing dusty and space-consuming air ducts. High quality Mitsubishi ductless systems also offer great energy savings.
If your home has more than one air handler (a multi-zone option), you might run into a situation where one of these units stops working. When this happens, there are few things you can try to troubleshoot the problem:
Check the batteries in the remote
This is something people often overlook when trying to run a ductless mini split. Although you can operate one of the air handlers using buttons on the front of the unit, it’s easier to use the remote control. If you discover that you can’t turn the unit on with the remote, the trouble might lie with the remote, not the unit. Change the remote’s batteries and see if you can get the unit running again.
Double-check the temperature setting
It’s possible that the temperature setting for the air handler is incorrect, or the air handler has been switched over to the wrong mode. Most units have their temperature controls on the remote, so make any adjustments and see if this causes the air handler to come back on.
See if a circuit breaker has tripped
If the unit’s display is blank, the problem may be that it has lost power. Go to the circuit breaker panel to see if the breaker for the unit has tripped. If it has, reset it and try to run the air handler again. If the breaker trips once more, there is probably a wiring issue. This will take the work of professionals to remedy.
Contact HVAC technicians for repairs
At this point, you have done what you could to troubleshoot the air handler. It’s time to bring in the professionals. They will diagnose the problems and fix them. In some cases, they may need to replace the entire air handler, but often the work will only require repairing motors or wiring.
