News about R22
The 1990 Clean Air Act mandated that the refrigerant R22 (Freon) must be phased out in an effort to eliminate ozone depleting substances. Since early 2010 R-22 could not be used in newly installed HVAC systems. Instead of Freon, systems are now installed using a more environmentally friendly refrigerant called R-410A.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently accelerated the phase-out of R-22 which has caused the cost to increase over 400% in the last few months. Additionally, some suppliers have put restrictions on the amount of R22 that can be purchased.
What this means for you:
If you do have a system that uses R-22, Raleigh Heating and Air was prepared for this and has the supply necessary to take care of any repair needs you may have. Since it is recognized that R22 will still be needed for some years to service and repair existing systems, service quantities of the refrigerant will be produced until 2020.
Technology and equipment may change but our commitment to your comfort will never change. When the time comes that you are ready to replace your older unit with a new system that uses the approved R-410A refrigerant, we will be happy to come out and provide you a free estimate.
