Look Out for Early Season Signs You Need Furnace Repair!
Your home’s furnace is going to be in for many months of work keeping everyone in the household warm. We hope you’ve already arranged for fall maintenance for your heater, because this is one of the best ways to prevent repair issues from cropping up. But there’s no way that you can prevent all furnace malfunctions, so during these early weeks of using your furnace, pay special attention to indications that the furnace has early problems developing. Remember, the faster you have repairs done, the less expensive they are likely to be because the problems won’t have had a chance to spread.
Early warning signs to call for repairs for a furnace
- Clicking sounds: There are a couple of sources for this noise, such as an electronic ignition system encountering trouble. If you hear this noise after the blower fan shuts down, it may indicate that the heat exchanger has cracks in it, which is a serious situation that can lead to carbon monoxide leaks. Get professionals on the job right away.
- Low airflow: The furnace may be generating heat, but the flow of the air coming from the vents is sluggish. This will result in cold spots in your house. The issue could be with the air handler or it might come from leaks in the ventilation system.
- Short-cycling: This is when your furnace starts to turn on and off rapidly over a short period of time, never completing a full heating cycle. Short-cycling drains enormous amounts of power and places huge stress on the furnace, so it needs to be corrected quickly. There are many different reasons for this to occur, but common ones are clogged filters, a miscalibrated thermostat, and even a poorly-sized furnace. (Never rely on amateurs for furnace installation!)
