Why Does My Air Conditioning Smell and Other Questions

post img

As temperatures begin to soar, we become increasingly reliant on our air conditioning. However, most people are clueless when it comes to their air conditioning systems. Today, we’d like to tackle a couple of common questions so you can be comfortable and confident in your heating and cooling system as we head into the summer heat.

  1. Why Does My Air Conditioning Smell?

Some common reasons that you might be having a smelly problem with your AC include:

  • Growth and mildew – If you have water clogging up somewhere inside your air conditioner, it can cause growth, which has a musty smell.
  • Dirty filters – Filters can collect mildew and growth, and if they are not changed on time, you will smell it. Make sure you change your filters at least once every three months.
  • A dead animal – If a dead animal takes up residence in your air ducts and dies, you will smell rotten eggs.
  • Motor shorting out – A burning, or gunpowder smell indicates the air conditioner has short-circuited.

No matter what the cause, you’ll need to call a technician to inspect your AC and discuss possible IAQ products if growth is found.

  1. How Often Should I Change My AC Filter?

Regularly changing your air conditioner’s filter is essential for optimal performance and indoor air quality. Air Experts recommends you change your filter at least every three months or whenever it is noticeably dirty or clogged. You may have to change your filter more frequently if you have pets, carpeting, or household members with allergies.

  1. What Temperature Should I Set My Thermostat to?

The ideal thermostat setting varies depending on personal comfort preferences and energy efficiency goals. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests setting your thermostat to 78°F (25.5°C) when you’re at home and adjusting it higher when you’re away to save energy. Running a ceiling fan while you’re in the room can make a higher thermostat setting feel more comfortable.

  1. Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air?

Several issues could cause your air conditioner to blow warm air. This is typically caused by a lack of airflow or mechanical failure. Regardless, our techs can quickly diagnose and fix the issue. Scheduling regular maintenance can prevent such problems and keep your AC functioning efficiently.

  1. When Should I Call a Professional for AC Repairs?

It’s time to call a professional if you notice:

  • Warm air blowing from vents
  • Unusual noises such as grinding, squealing, or banging
  • Foul odors while the AC is running
  • Water leaking through the ceiling under your system or excessive condensation
  • Inadequate airflow or uneven cooling throughout your home
  1. How Can I Extend the Lifespan of My AC System?

Proper maintenance can help prolong the lifespan of your air conditioning system. Here are some maintenance tips:

  • Regularly replace air filters.
  • Keep your outdoor unit clear of debris and vegetation.
  • Schedule your biannual maintenance checks. One for your heating system in the fall or winter and one for your air conditioning system in the spring or summer.

Hopefully, you understand your AC a bit more and will store this information until it comes in handy. Remember, a well-maintained AC system keeps you comfortable and contributes to a healthier home.
