How Electronic Air Filtration Cleans Your Air

Indoor air quality is important to your overall comfort, and one of the best ways to achieve healthy indoor air is with whole-home air filtration in Raleigh. While your HVAC system comes with a standard air filter, this filter is not designed for air quality; rather, its job is to reduce the amount of dirt and dust in your system. This is why, if you want improve your indoor air quality, you’ll want to consider a whole-home air filtration system. When it comes to air filtration choices, you have two: mechanical or electronic. Today, we’re going to discuss electronic air filters, and how they work. But for any air filtration need, make sure you call the people you can trust: Raleigh Heating & Air.

Types of Electronic Filters

There are two types of electronic filters:

  • Electronic Precipitators
  • Ion Generators

Each uses electricity to capture and remove particles, but each does so a little differently.

Electronic Precipitators

Electronic precipitators clean the air by capturing airborne particles via electrostatic attraction. Using a small amount of electricity, electronic precipitators draw air through an ionization section where particles are electrically charged. Oppositely-charged metal collection plates attract these charged particles and capture them. The plates need to be cleaned approximately every 3 months to remain effective.

Ion Generators

Ion generators use a similar process, but do not draw air through an ion section, nor do they have collection plates. Instead, negative ions are dispersed into the air where they attach themselves to particles; these particles then land on surfaces in your home, such as walls, tables and counters. When you clean these surfaces, the particles are removed.

Many air filters cannot capture all biological contaminants, so it’s recommended that an air filtration system be paired with UV germicidal lighting to ensure the best air quality possible.

An air filtration system in Raleigh can help improve the health of your family, particularly for those who suffer from allergies and/or chronic respiratory illnesses like asthma. An air filtration system can also reduce the overall level of dust and dirt in your system, putting less strain on your AC.
