Air Conditioning Repair Question: My Fan Runs but the Compressor Does Not

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

Your air conditioning system has a lot of moving parts, and considering how much you use your AC, its not surprising that some might break down. One part in particular, the compressor, is critical to your AC system’s ability to provide cooling to your home. If your compressor stops working, it likely means that you home isn’t being cooled at all. Our Clayton, NC air conditioning repair professionals have years of experience working with all different kinds of air conditioning problems. We wanted to give a big of explanation on one in particular: what is happening when the fan is running but the compressor is not?

There are a few reasons why this might be happening. It is most likely an electrical problem with your AC. Capacitors are like mini jump starts for the various motors in your AC system. You have two fan motors—one inside and one outside—as well as the motor to run the compressor. Capacitors store up energy and when the motors need to turn on, the capacitor will release that boost of energy to get the motors running. Each motor has its own capacitor and if one of them is not working, then it usually means that the motor won’t run. This can effect the compressor and not the fan. You will always want a professional air conditioning contractor to come out and examine your system if you suspect an electrical problem.

If you need Raleigh, NC air conditioning repair services, the friendly experts at Raleigh Heating & Air are just a phone call away. We can quickly diagnose and repair any problem you are having with your AC.
